As I launch various sites I’m often asked by friends and clients how they can learn about the latest trends in technology that they can use for their marketing or experimental purposes. Sometimes the question deserves a question like, what would you like to accomplish in learning the latest trends? How will it improve your life or business? There are countless websites that highlight the trends in the industry and I’ll cover the ones that are relevant to what I follow and create for.
Gizmodo
This site covers most of the latest gadgets and the sister sites fill in the gap for the rest of what the world is doing. Gizmodo is my morning coffee that highlights an overview of the gadgets that push the web to new heights and the people who work on keeping us close together to technology.
CNN
I know this may sound odd from a news standpoint. Simply I watch them because as unbiased as they are I have a gut feeling that they are biased towards Apple. They love Apple. The link is actually the Money section under CNN that highlights the latest technology trends. They talk about what players are doing to match the iPad or the next Android phone that will exceed iPhone (which in many cases it has).
Envato
How do you say that again? Envato is an Australian company with some nice brains behind the outfit. If I could go back a few years and had time on my hand this would be a similar venture I would have partaken on. Envato is a multi-discipline resource for various designers, coders, videographers or for businesses with a low budget to get a presence on the web at a faster rate than other template based sites on the web. The team is international and the quality of work they sell and produce is amongst the bleeding edge of coding and design.
Appleinsider
As an Apple user a high grade intelligence gathering site that personally I feel they have the best track record in predicting and analyzing the various effects Apple products have on the industry as a whole. They track Apple’s patents, competitors, history and many other tidbits like html5 and latest multi-touch developments.
9to5mac
This site is my second stop after Appleinsider. Just like AI they have had better hits as of lately in announcing prototypes and insider scoop. Jonny Evans is a frequent contributor on the site from Computerworld, and Seth keep that site alive with fresh information and sometimes good hypothetical approaches as to what the Cupertino company may do next.
If I mentioned music, fashion, food network, MTV I think I would be preaching to the quire. For the latest as to what our future is interested in I look at my kids and the gadgets they seem to gravitate towards. Zu zu pets? How are they to improve the world?! Hope some of these links peek your interest in some of the latest tech trends. Next I’ll try to post how this ties to Web design trends.
